The Care Quality Commission were compelled to bring charges against the Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust for two separate incidents of avoidable harm to patients, both of which led to their tragic deaths. These charges have been admitted by the Trust today and they will be sentenced for the harm they have caused.
This sadly comes all too soon after the widely reported Shrewsbury scandal into maternity care and raises serious concerns regarding standards of care throughout the Trust in recent years. Additionally, the likely avenue for the Courts in this scenario is to fine the Trust for their actions/inactions, which will in turn put further pressure on NHS resources. There needs to be significant lessons learned, and quickly, by the Trust to protect patients from future incidents like this.
