They may not be able to understand what the future holds for them even though you may have discussed your separation for some time beforehand. Support them by letting them know that they have a right to feel sad about what has happened to their family and it is important that as parents you help the child to find healthy and acceptable ways to deal with the situation. For example, write about their feelings or draw a picture about how they feel, or read a story book about a child with divorced parents so that they understand that they are not alone.
